I've never seen a single bit of barbed wire or baling wire left in a field by a farmer....

(Just to play Devil's Advocate).

If they do that and kill thier own live stock im sure they would be angry with themselves. However if someone else leaves the wire in thier field from a lantern its another matter and i`m sure they will be even more annoyed!

I like lanterns dont get me wrong, but if we have the ability to make ones without wire, then lets use those, i dont know where my last pack came from as they were a gift but they were marketed as such, no wire, biodegradeable, it was a type of string that held the fuel cell in place....

Here's the picture the BBC has on it's homepage at the moment to draw attention to the story!
Sky Lanterns-cows_lanterns_gettyacc_626x260.jpg
It'll be replaced by something else as soon as they have another story or programme to promote. But plenty of folk'll see it until then. On the positive side of things, maybe it can help to raise awareness of agriculture friendly products and benefit those who produce and supply them by making people think to buy them instead of worse alternatives.

PS - I actually rather like the picture - a good bit of artwork.

I'm sure I recognise those clusters of lanterns from some marketing material somewhere. Even the beeb don't respect copyright any more.

Well bugger me.....i kid you not, i was driving home tonight, and saw a light through some trees that line a road i go down, it was a house light of some sort - to cut short etc....

I drive a lot, so think a lot of random things, and Sky Latterns came to mind, and how it would be good to set off at this years GFN, then i thought bout the video appearing on here when they started dropping out the sky, was hundreds of em - my train of thought then went to, what if that happened to a Thatched house..........

........I like em, but the not knowing where they land ain't great, do you reckon a ban could be placed on them, purely from the fact, not of the content, but there not controllable are they, just what are your thoughts??

(Damn did i say cut short lol)

it's this aspect that I feel will be a deciding factor, having outlawed fireworks of erratic flight I can see lanterns going down the same route, rightly or wrongly

But it's not really erratic FLIGHT. In fact the flightpath is probably more predictable than a rocket. It's just the landing zone that's so unpredictable!

Andy, erratic flight maybe not, they don't shoot one way but then the other....but, and its a big but, not knowing where they land, or not knowing at what point the drop out the sky, makes them completely uncontrollable.

2 points of this are, if you stand in your garden, you can guarantee that the direction of the wind is not pointing towards a building of higher flammable content such as a thatched roof, plus no-one can guarantee that a change of wind direction doesn't occur.

I like them as much as the next person, but this is a debate and im just justifying my points, i hope they do stay, but if people kick up a fuss, there is plenty of negatives to give the state ammo to restrict there use.

Ok, keep em in the "noughties" I say. Just another amusing fad. Lets face it, they were a bit boring then, even more so now. Ooo can you still see it.
Lets quit while we're still ahead with them. I can imagine the scene, pulling wire out our sausages and pre-warning the fire brigade of our intended flight paths.
