Don't read a newspaper article looking for facts especially if there is a gory story to report. He may well have other injuries not mentioned, and may simply not want to parade his broken face in public. Sinus (just behind the face) damage may be a prevention feature for scuba diving.

I imagine it goes a lot further than 'just lost the use of an eye' - he is no doubt in constant pain, on regular medication which will affect him being allowed to scuba dive, as well as pressures on and around the damaged eye socket - he no doubt suffered damage to surrounding tissues and air ways that join nose to throat etc, surfing could result in a knock that could further damage these probably now delicate area's.

if hes only lost the use of 1 eye why carnt he do those anymore ? (i say only i know its not exactly a splinter)

depth of field might be an issue i guess but im sure surfing and suba diving can be done with 1 eye surly
Maybe not! I've been informed by an optician that my right eye is classed as "lazy" as it doesn't see a sharp image....and my left eye compensates with "better than 20/20 vision...Whatever that means! All I know for certain is that if I lost the sight of my left eye I would be registered as blind! So it's possible that he wouldn't be able to do these things...I'm glad I've invested in a Cromwell firefighters helmet for lighting fireworks...better safe than sorry.

If it's any consolation, if you blew your good eye off your lazy eye should get better I believe.

I'm not sure that your optician would recommend that!

This was obviously a well thought out scheme to get around legislation. It just baffles me why someone who thought that much about how to achieve what he wanted would be so idiotic about something as obvious as PPE.

I'm stuck on how to get to page 2?

Trouble is that
1/ PPE is the last line of protection not the first
2/ the trainee cannot be expected to know the hazards or the way to minimise the hazard and risk.
3/ the site operator is responsible for the safety of all people on the site, not exclusively their employees.

However clearly something exceptional happened, as the proprietor wouldn't accept that degree of injury to himself.
