It's worth noting this bit of the report....

Quote:
Police said they are considering bringing charges against Smith as the firework had been illegally made.

Friends told police he had leant over the 3ft long pipe to launch the mortar bomb from his back garden but had not got out of the way when it ignited

Whilst it's a sad accident that I wouldn't wish on anyone, let it stand as a warning against illegal firework manufacture and unsafe firing practices. Nor should this be the sort of story that's grist to the anti-fireworks brigade mill. Banning properly made consumer fireworks wouldn't deal with this sort of situation at all - indeed, it could promote it if more folk try to make their own because they can't buy them.

I read a post on USA forum from a close relative of the injured man stating that the injury happened when the man put his hand down a mortar to retrieve the fuse from a hang fired shell. In this incident the provenance of the shell seems irrelevant. Apparently the severed limb was sent to the hospital but wasn't intact enough to re attach.

Now if only the press reported the children injured on bicycles with as much interest as fireworks accidents!

what do you think of this? - APC Forum

Proves that even people well into fireworks can do things wrong and get hurt.

Interesting forum, Arthur. Bookmarked. Thanks.

Mind you..... a sister's husband's second cousin isn't a close relative. I'd say it's a fairly distant relative of the poster. I have to work with the "table of kindred and affinity" that sets out who folk cannot legally marry.... it turns out that a person's own cousin is sufficiently distant a relative for them to be allowed to marry each other. I'm wondering if the poster is thinking of the children of his sister's husband's cousin? Some folk reckon that's a second cousin relationship, but it's a first cousin once removed. A second cousin is a bit more distant than that.

Not really close referring to BCP more "within the family group that gets the information directly", as I'd rather trust a first hand report than a press write up.
