Fireworks Shop prosecuted
29 July 2010 The owners of a fireworks shop have been prosecuted for illegally selling fireworks to under 18s. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, were also charged with unsafe storage of fireworks. Both pleaded guilty to the offences at xxxxxxxxxxxxxx and were each given a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered to pay costs totalling £1,116.99.
The court heard that two fifteen year old girls had bought fireworks from the shop in xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx as part of a test purchase operation organised by the Council’s trading standards officers. The teenagers were sold the fireworks without being asked their ages or for any form of identification. Several large boxes of fireworks were also discovered scattered around the premises.
I just spotted this and whilst it's public information I feel appropriate to remove some details.
What's interesting is that this was a local seasonal shop that appeared last year, near me and I am pleased to read of the case and the result. All I will say was that upon a quick visit (not to buy just to see what and how they were selling) it was a mess and totally unsafe and is a classic example of why trading standards are needed and in this case got a good result.
