I thought about a similar trek, from Alicante - as we can't get flights to Valencia locally (Ryanair have stopped East Mid to Valencia )

That's how I did it last year, Ryanair stoped direct flights from Dublin, so managed to get a real cheap return flight to Alicante.
You need to make your way from the airport to the train station - there's a regular bus costs a few Euro, and a taxi will cost around €10 to €15.
the train will cost anywhere from €18 to €28 depending on time and type of train. Express is dearer. Takes around 2 hrs.

I would do it again, but I don't think I would hire a car and then have to worry about trying to park it in Valencia during Las Fallas. Would the insurance cover it for any potential damage from street mascletas ?

Mind you - looking at the late flight arrival times in Alicante for me, it might be cheaper to hire a car.
