don't know about the right way up but speaker and interconnect cables can make a big difference to the sound of a hifi

No chance. I only have a wee Peavey combo with 1x15" Sheffield speaker. It's 85w and is loud enough for any pub. The Daddy bought it for my 21st (the actual one, 11 years ago) and despite the mental parties I used to throw, him testing it remains the only time we have ever had a complaint about noise.
For his wee little six strings he's got 2 Marshall JCM800 2x12" combis running from a JMP-1 pre-amp and a JFX-1 effects rack. All Marshall, all valve.
Setting up the amps out wide with a fraction of a second delay between the two creates one hell of a big sound.

HiFi wise he still uses his old Bose speakers which are older than me. He had to replace the woofers as they got so old the rubber surrounds had perished so much as you ran your finger around the edge they turned to dust.
Fair play to Bose; after trying to get replacements unsuccessfully from everywhere else (he assumed they were too old for Bose to help), Bose sent us some almost identical replacements after giving them the serial number off the back of the old cabs, and they matched amazingly well.

'tis indeed, it's solid state mind you but has some fairly fabulous sounds in it and to put it into some kind of context, for what I paid for the head, cab and floorboard to control it all, I'd still be about £500 short of a Mesa Boogie Rectifier all valve head but it was a huge investment for me after 4 years out of work I can tell you but when you get asked to come play in a heavy rock band what can you do...

I've never used those Marshall pre amps but have heard very good things about them over the years

Respect to Bose...you do occasionally find a company willing to help and I've heard stories of hifi companies going out of their way to help customers with old kit.

(PS apologises, I noticed when I moved the head for the pic I'd inflated it's output, it's 'only' 300 watts)

You wait 'til you meet the missus; I'm not sure she even knows what her actual age is!

....but just about every studio where the music was originally mixed will have used bog-standard 5 Amp Mains cable for their speakers!

So you could argue that if you want it to sound exactly as they intended, you need to do the same.

Really ? I've never seen anyone use mains cable for speaker cable

Bottom line is trust your ears...if the salesman says 'this is the best amp in the world' but it makes your favourite CD sound like a pile of to your ears, don't buy it.

All I can say is don't dismiss anything (perhaps with the exception of drawing round the edge of CD's with a green marker ) until you've tried it and listened to it.

I was fortunate enough to have a 'proper' hifi shop near me that leant me a selection of speaker and internet cables over a weekend. Without spending crazy money, £8.00 / metre speaker cable and £75.00 for a pair of interconnects, there was a subtle but noticeable improvement in the sound.

Bottom line is, you wouldn't put a set of remoulds on a Ferrari, why would you use bell wire on a hifi you've just spent, £500, £5000, £50,000 on ?
