Default Ceiling speakers?

Hi techies

As you all know I is thick as 3 planks, so be gentle with any answers please.

I'm looking for ceiling speakers that will work with my mac, wifi/bluetooth or even wires with a USB connection, and some kind of power switch or linked to the mac, would they light-up when the computer's turned on?

Has anyone installed any of these & are you satisfied with the sound output?

Thanks for you invaluable time

Hi I've got a Bose system that's wireless has main unit which goes in next to one speaker and wireless to all other speakers also has infared sensor that detects movement in th room so as you move a round house music will follow. if you have speakers in more rooms it is however not cheap, as it's Bose but sounds great. most ceiling speakers are very tiny in sound as there no breathing hole for base Bose system uses a pass round system and the speakers are about 6 inch hope this helps.

If you want really good ceiling speakers look at speakercraft. http://www.speakercraft.com/

A friend of mine installs home automation equipement and swears by them.

It's what I will be using when he pulls his fingers out and sorts me out!

Jeff - im with you on that, those Sonus units were rather tasty - 355 notes a unit ain't cheap, but worth it im sure!

But on the original point of ceiling speakers, be careful what you get in terms of the word 'ceiling' speakers, i have known people to put round, marine grade surface mount speakers, on the ceiling of a bathroom and i don't think the resulting sound was too great, you must get some resonance from the ceiling board (cue, sound engineer type person to correct me lol)

Better option is small satellite speakers in the corner, fixed to a wall, more solid object.

Ignore me, im waffling.....

Hi Jeff,

In terms of getting ceiling speakers to work with a computer, potentially via wifi/bluetooth, I can't offer too many suggestions 'cos I've never done it and don't know what sort of kit is out there to achieve it...although I'm sure there is plenty.

Mark, in terms of wall mounting satellite speakers I would err on the side of caution as most of the ones I've come across need to be used with a sub as the drive units in the speakers are tiny and the musicality of the speaker is poor on it's own...I'm thinking along the lines of the KEF 'Eggs' that are/were popular in surround systems, used on their own they have virtually no bass response but once combined with a sub they work quite well for films, still wouldn't use 'em for music though

About the best satellite / sub system I saw which made a good attempt at music was one of the M & K packages but they were slightly bigger which obviously helps and a lot more expensive.

I believe that KEF did make dedicated in ceiling speakers in the past (think I installed some once when working at the hifi shop if memory serves) and although they are fairly shallow in design, the ones I remember were the size of a dinner plate so they had a fairly good sized drive unit in them and therefore bass response was pretty good. On the install we did they were mounted into a plaster board false ceiling in a barn conversion and there was nothing behind them as such.
