Default Firing To Live Music

I have a display to live music (1812, Rule Britannia, Hope and Glory - the works) coming up next month. Fortunately my popular classical music knowledge is pretty good, and I can even read a score (just about), so hopefully should be OK. But it made me wonder if anyone out there has any clever tricks/hints/shortcuts they use when firing to a live band or orchestra ?

Ask for a monitor speaker at your firing position so you can hear what the orchestra is doing

You may like a audio and video feed from the conductor, what is the distance to you from the conductor's rostrum? Will there be a video team there? can you get a feed from them.

Being able to hear the music is of course critical on these shows. I've had experience of audio feeds before, and they are frequently inadequate, particularly if you are firing relatively close to the pyro. You also need to see the conductor, so I quite like the idea of a video feed, but they tend to move the camera around the orchestra and not leave it in a fixed position.

Get your own wireless security camera and get it gaffer taped to the conductors music stand. A PP3 powered camera may do the job, otherwise look for something better - Just check with the video people in advance that you can use 2.4GHz or 5.nGHZ as your link without interfering with their system. An analogue system will keep time much better than a digital system so a cheap composite video camera should do the job easily.

Just fire at will they never play at the same speed as the score or recoding they send you.
Last year I fired to a folk band and they finished with a totaly different track than the one they gave me so it was yeh hah as she finished her last song and then it was fire fire fire as quick as possible brilliant.
Or as they have said above get a monitor close to firing site and get yourself a Nigel who bounces around to the music and waves his hand when you need to press fire.

I like your cavalier spirit ! And in fact that will work pretty well for most of the music. But the 1812 cannon fx need to be pretty much spot on, or the musicologists get a tad upset.

Wireless AV & mic and a music score marked up with the cues. I have used an earpiece under my ear defenders so you can remain near to the pyro and still hear the music. The key to firing with live music is preparation and a manual electric firing system!

Getting those cannon fx spot on is a tad tricky. What pyro will you be using? If shells, you need to account for the flight time before the burst and that means launching them that amount of time ahead of the music. That's easy enough if you're running with recorded music, but with live music it'll take some arranging. So, instead of shells, I'd go for mines / ground maroons fired electrically with no delays.... you'd still need a cue from the conductor or a good knowledge of the music (so you know yourself when to fire) and the ability to hear it above the noise of your display. It'd be worth having a firing box just for those effects so you can hit the fire button as needed without having to somehow work it in with the firing system for the main display.

I can remember hearing it done right only twice in a live performance (and not quite right rather more often, and it does spoil things!)...... once, many years ago, with a military band on parade with field guns. I think the gunners got a cue from the bandmaster. The other time was in the Albert Hall, London, when stage maroons were used and I reckon fired on cue from the conductor. They might even have had a technician in amongst the orchestra with a firing box waiting for the cue....... is that something you could arrange?

Get someone else on the buttons and you hold the score with a live feed to you, even if its just via ear phones, you can then read the score with the music and tap the firer on the shoulder when the appropriate point is reached seen it done this way.......seemed to work..... the speed/tempo of live music is always a problem....
